Hong Kong actress Carina Lau Ka-Ling, who starred in films such as "Ashes of Time" and "The Unfaithful Wife," was assaulted by a man with a water bottle in the city's Tai Kok Tsui district. She is the latest high-profile public figure to be sexually assaulted in Hong Kong--a place that has been dubbed “Asia’s World City” for its veneer of prosperity and stability. In a video obtained by the New York Times, a man in his thirties is shown approaching Lau from behind. He is holding a water bottle in one hand and appears to be startled by the 33-year-old actress' presence in a shopping mall. He then chases her before attempting to grab her from behind. The video shows her turning around and attempting to run out of the mall with him in pursuit. In another scene, she wipes away tears as she attempts to talk on the phone. The incident reportedly took place on Feb. 11, 2010. The video was recorded by a security camera. The New York Times has published that its video is close to two hours in length. Lau appealed for the public to assist with the investigation. "Please help me make sure he is punished severely ... I can't bear it if my attacker is not brought to justice," she told the Hong Kong Police Force Commission in a recorded statement, according to Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper. More than five months after the attack, police have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident. Hong Kong has generally been viewed as one of the safest cities in the world, but this incident coupled with other recent high-profile assaults on citizens has raised concerns that Hong Kong is experiencing a crime wave. Government authorities including the police commissioner have denied this claim, but it remains to be seen whether they can fulfill their promise to ensure safety for all citizens. The assault on Lau came just one week after Chum Fuk-sing, deputy chairman of the Democratic Party, was attacked outside his home. The 70-year-old politician was punched by a man aged between 20 and 25, who also kicked him before fleeing. The man is yet to be arrested, but his identity has been revealed by police. Hong Kong's police force has increased its presence in residential areas after several high-profile assaults on celebrity women. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior.
